The situation
Renovation projects are among the highest-value transactions a homeowner makes, and the research that precedes them is correspondingly long. Homeowners compare firms for months. Increasingly, part of that comparison happens inside AI assistants rather than a list of blue links, and the firms that get named in those answers are drawn from a narrower set than the firms that rank on page one.
This client competes in Toronto design-build renovation, one of the more crowded local categories in the city.
What we found
Local pack placement and AI citation eligibility are driven by overlapping but distinct signals. The local pack runs on proximity, relevance, and prominence. AI citation runs on whether content answers a specific question in a form a retrieval system can lift cleanly, backed by entity information that stays consistent across the site, the Google Business Profile, and third-party listings.
What we did
The Google Business Profile was rebuilt around the services the firm actually sells, with categories and service listings matching the work rather than the broad label the category invites. Citations were brought into line so the firm's name, address, and phone number read identically across the site, the profile, and third-party listings. That consistency is what lets a retrieval system treat them as one entity.
On the site, we built pages for the individual services and answered the specific questions homeowners ask while comparing firms, structured so an answer can be lifted cleanly rather than inferred from a page written as a brochure. Schema was implemented so the same facts are available to machines reading the page, not only to people.
The results
The firm holds a top three local pack placement and has generated more than 230 qualified leads from search.
Qualified is the operative word. In a category where a single project can be worth six figures, lead volume alone is a poor measure. A firm can generate hundreds of enquiries from homeowners with no budget and no timeline. Leads that arrive already matched to the services the firm actually sells are worth more, and that match is set by which queries the site is built to answer.
What this means for your business
Visibility now has two surfaces. Ranking on page one and being cited by an AI assistant are related but not identical, and businesses optimising only for the first are losing ground on the second. Our AI search optimization and local SEO work addresses both.
